Evaluation of the potential use of umbilical cord lining extract to reduce warmth, redness and pain post light CO2 laser resurfacing in a 14 patient single-blinded split-face trial.
Laser resurfacing was performed with a Cynosure SmartSkin CO2 laser at 20 joules, 400 ms dwell time, delay of 0.5s in a 10x10 scan pattern, and 350 pitch. A single pass was performed for the entire face followed by a second pass for the perioricular area, orbital rhytides and nose.
Immediately after completion of the procedure, the right side of the face was treated with 5cc of basal media, and the left side of the face was treated with 5cc of CALECIM® Serum – epithelial and mesenchymal stem cell culture media. Patients continued the treatment at home for the next 30 days.
Patients were surveyed immediately following the procedure, at 1 day, 7 days and finally at 30 days post procedure. The survey recorded their perception of warmth, pain, redness and porosity.
On day 1, 14% of patients reported more warmth on the non-umbilical cord lining extract treated side. Increased warmth continued to be reported on day 7 at 50% and on day 30 at 64%.
On day 1, 21% had more pain on the non-umbilical cord lining extract treated side. Increased pain continued to be reported on day 7 at 43% and on day 30 at 71%.
On day 1, redness was perceived as 50% greater on the non-umbilical cord lining extract treated side. Increased redness continued to be reported on day 7 at 57% and on day 30 at 65%.
The overall conclusion was that the CALECIM® Serum treated side demonstrated more comfort post laser resurfacing in terms of warmth, pain and redness. Additionally, all patients described a generalized increase in “overall comfort” and expressed a wish to obtain CALECIM® Serum for routine use on their facial skin.
Finally no adverse events were reported and no increase in acne was noted which commonly occurs with the use of heavier creams or ointments post laser therapy.
