Calecim Advanced Hair System-Choosing between In clinic versus home based treatments
By Dr Bernard Tan, Medical Director of Bay Aesthetics Clinic, Singapore
About Calecim Advanced Hair System
Calecim Advanced Hair System (AHS) is a Mesenchymal stem cell growth factor serum that is used for the treatment of hair loss in men and women. It contains multiple growth factors and cytokines- including Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), Fibroblast Growth Factor (FGF), Platelet Derived Growth Factor (PDGF), Transforming Growth Factor (TGF), Insulinlike Growth Factor (IGF) and Hepatocyte Growth Factor (HGF).
How does Calecim Advanced Hair Serum work?
These growth factors promote hair growth by acting on the hair follicle to increase blood supply and cell proliferation (activity of hair growth), prolong anagen (hair growth phase) and conversion from telogen to anagen (dormant hair follicles become active again)
This treatment primarily addresses hair loss due to androgenetic alopecia (male and female pattern hair loss) and telogen effluvium (acute hair loss induced by stress and severe illness)- a proper diagnosis must be made to exclude other alternative causes of hair loss.
Who is this treatment suitable for?
Calecim’s Advanced Hair Serum treatment treats hair loss due to androgenetic alopecia (male and female pattern hair loss) and telogen effluvium (acute hair loss induced by stress, severe illness or pregnancy). Early to moderate stages of hair loss due to the above conditions respond well to this treatment because hair follicles are still viable and can be stimulated. However, advanced cases with large areas of exposed scalp are less likely to respond well because there aren’t enough viable hair follicles and may require hair transplant surgery.
What kind of results are expected?
Patients can expect hair density to increase by 20 to 30 percent after a course of treatment, with full results seen 2-3 months after treatment completion.
How many treatment sessions recommended?
For early hair loss: six-week programme, with weekly in-clinic treatments.
For moderate hair loss, a twelve-week program is recommended, with weekly in clinic treatments.
The time between treatments should be one to two weeks. Once a good result has been achieved, treatments can be spaced out to every 1-2 months for maintenance.
Post treatment scalp care
Patients should come to clinic with a clean scalp free of any hair products, and it is recommended not to wash hair for 4-6 hours after a treatment. There is no downtime and patients can resume normal activity right away
Considering a hair transplant?
Treatment with Calecim AHS can give satisfactory results in early to moderate hair loss. In advanced hair loss, a hair transplant may give better results. Treatment with Calecim AHS after a hair transplant has been noted to improve the hair growth of transplanted hair follicles.
Patients on medical treatment for hair loss
Topical minoxidil 5%, oral finasteride and hair growth supplements should be continued.
In clinic or home based treatment?
In clinic
- Advantages: Therapist can focus on areas of hair loss, less wastage, more consistency in treatment, low level laser therapy
- Disadvantages: Higher cost, inconvenient
Home based (self application with dermastamp)
- Advantages: Lower cost, convenient
- Disadvantages: Compliance issues, difficult to reach crown areas, more wastage, no low level laser therapy
